Putting the power to the test

At PARKSIDE, we want all DIY dreams to come true. We therefore place the highest demands on our products and they need to have one thing above all else: Power! So it was time to put our promise to the test. The idea of "THE PULL" was born.

The competition in figures

Vision becomes technology: After months of planning, strong partners and a customized test set-up, the world record attempt is ready.

The opponent: an Airbus A380 – 24.1 meters high, 79.8 meters wingspan, space for up to 850 passengers.

The challenger: our 12 V cordless drill driver with infinitely variable speed control and up to 1,500 rpm.

Stronger together

We have brought excellent partners on board for this challenge. Scientific journalist Niklas Kolorz has calculated that the cordless drill driver can theoretically pull over 300 tons. Together with a university, he wants to prove this. The Technical University of Darmstadt has created a unique set-up and designed a traction machine.

The idea becomes reality

Things are getting serious: challenger and opponent meet in a hangar. A 24-ton counterweight anchors a cable winch, which is driven by the 12 V cordless drill driver. The only question now is: Will it manage it? The answer is YES, with PARKSIDE Power!

Will we break the world record?

Nerves and cables winch were stretched to breaking point: Under the eyes of all spectators, the challenger triumphed and moved the 300-ton aircraft a full 1.43 meters. PARKSIDE tools with unbelievable power make the world record possible!

A record that makes history

No one has ever attempted this challenge before. But PARKSIDE power is too convincing: "THE PULL" challenge was accompanied, documented and carried out in accordance with its requirements by a Guinness World Record representative. The result is clear and now official: the 12 V cordless drill driver can pull an A380. Our special thanks go to our partners: Lufthansa Airlines Technical Fleet Management, Airbus A380 "Mike Charlie" and Technical University of Darmstadt.

FAQs

How is this possible? What forces are at work here? The biggest challenges come with questions, which you can get answers to here.

The main element is the static friction between the tire and the ground – the crucial factor is not the weight of the A380, but the rolling friction that needs to be overcome. As soon as the rolling resistance is broken, even a comparatively low but constant tractive force can set the aircraft in motion – supported by torque, gear reduction and a clever direction of force.

Months of preparation by TU Darmstadt and simulations preceded the test. The test mechanism was tested under realistic conditions in several test set-ups – for example with weights, rolling resistance measurements and controlled tensile tests. Only when all the parameters were right did the project enter the final implementation phase in the hangar.

Yes! With expertise, technology and patience. The key is to overcome the resistance when starting to roll. The cordless drill driver drives a mechanism that delivers constant pulling force via a specially designed transmission – our cable winch. This shows how power a small device can be when you have physics on your side.

The heart of the system: a mechanical gear reduction that slowly but powerfully converts the high torque of the drill driver into traction. A combination of spindle, cable pull and bracket was used to direct the flow of force optimally onto the giant of the skies.

No tricks, no cheating. The entire test was carried out under real conditions with external experts, technical testing and independent witnesses. The aircraft weight was also verified – including conditions tested for the Guinness World Record.

The Airbus A380 weighs over 300 tons. However, as soon as it is ready to roll and no brakes are engaged, a constant pulling force is sufficient – comparable to a very heavy trailer on well-oiled wheels. The trick was to apply this force precisely and permanently with a 12 V cordless drill driver.
